CO-OP

What We Did.

Direct Energy Solutions delivered a wireless energy monitoring solution that gave Co-op real-time visibility of energy use across its logistics estate. The result was improved compliance reporting, greater operational insight, and a smarter, data-led approach to energy management.

Co-op had limited visibility into energy consumption across its logistics depots and Funeralcare sites. Whilst whole-site consumption data was available at main meter level, there was no granular breakdown of where or how that energy was actually being used. Many sites had existing sub-meters installed in switchrooms, but readings were only visible locally on the panel and couldn't be accessed remotely. This made it challenging to accurately isolate chilled versus ambient consumption for Climate Change Agreement (CCA) compliance, validate energy savings from efficiency initiatives, or identify waste and poor-performing assets across the estate.

Direct Energy Solutions took on full end-to-end delivery of a wireless energy monitoring system across Co-op's estate. Starting with a trial at the Andover depot, a large cold storage facility, DES designed the solution, provisioned all hardware, trained Co-op's contractors, provided project oversight throughout, and commissioned the complete system. Individual equipment loads, electrical panels, refrigeration, freezer and ambient storage circuits were all brought into scope. The non-invasive wireless sensors required no fixed wiring and caused no site downtime, with cellular-connected bridges transmitting real-time energy data every 10 seconds to a cloud-based management platform.

The Andover trial was a success, and DES subsequently rolled out the solution across all Co-op distribution centres. Co-op now has device-level, real-time energy visibility across its entire logistics estate, accessible remotely by site managers and the central energy team. The platform delivers live consumption, cost, and carbon data, enabling accurate CCA compliance reporting, measurable verification of energy-saving initiatives, and proactive identification of inefficiencies and underperforming assets. What was previously a manual estimation exercise is now a fully connected, data-driven energy management capability.
